Bere Island

For this section of the Beara Way we will head to the Bere Island Ferry in the morning for the quick trip across Bantry Bay to the peaceful and historic Bere Island.  We can stop in at the Spar Supermarket for lunch supplies on our way or request a packed lunch from our accomodation host.  This hike can be broken into two parts or combined into one if we want to see the Ardnakinna Lighthouse, the Martello Signal Towers, the megolithic Wedge Tomb, and the Gallan Standing Stone and visit the lovely Bere Island Heritage Center.  The views from the heights of the island of the neighboring mountain ranges and the sea are astonishing. Whether it is a sunny day with the wind gently stirring the grasses or a foggy, rainy day the island is a true experience of local Island life and history.

(12-17km a half or full day of hiking)
